Mural Art

In March of 2020, I took a trip to Athens, Greece to volunteer with an organization dear to my heart: The Hard Places Community. I did know I was going to paint a mural, but little did I know - the world was going to shut down... This process was very interesting!

A Mural in the Making

We learned very quickly that nearly everything was either shutting down indefinitely or only allowing to-go options. When it came to paint colors, I knew we needed to act quick to have the time and ability to choose properly. Luckily we were able to get all the supplies with no problem, but then it was time to start painting.

The Inspiration

We thought it would be meaningful to find inspiration from another location in the organization and the organizer in Greece showed me a picture of a mural from their Phnom Penh location. I immediately recalled that my friend Bungsour painted the mural in Cambodia, and I knew that was officially our inspiration to draw from!

Let's Paint a Mural!

Once it was time to get started, we had little time left with lights. At this time (in the very beginning of COVID lockdown), businesses were supposed to be shut down. Even though we were just painting the space and not operating as any type of business, we still had to be quiet and careful. What does that mean? Well, we painted in the dark with lanterns...

Lights Out, Mural Up

We had to get it done all in one go, and we did!! It took a lot of trial and error, but I would do it all again tomorrow. I'm just anxiously waiting for my next mural project!

(and don't mind the low quality pictures, the lighting was nonesistant...
